Summer Project II: The Flat Topped Pork Pie

p144092-Grasse-Fragonard_Museum_Grasse_France

Buster Keaton was the first to come up with this original design, which was called the Pork Pie  as part of his attempt to differentiate himself from other Silent Movie Starts of the 1920′s. He was a writer, producer and actor in his own films, and between himself and his wife, (whom he had trained to make the hats)  they made every pork pie Keaton would ever wear – by hand.

This is my first attempt at a Buster Keaton style Pork Pie, and I don’t think it’s too shabby. Keaton originally took old stetsons and stiffened the brims with a sugar water mixture, then cut and hand shaped them.

My Pork Pie is all hand blocked just as Keaton’s would have been. Made with a stiffened grey wool felt hood and black grosgrain ribbon. For purchase of this hat or a similar style, enquire by email :)

Next hat in my summer projects;

A small stripped sailor hat aesthetically similar to that of the Pork Pie but made with Buckram and fabric.
